Caerleon, S. Wales, 2005

The first British Whip Cracking Convention was hosted in South Wales at Newport College, University of Wales - special thanks  to the founder of WhipcrackUK and the BWC, Peter Gamble, without whose efforts, it would probably never have happened.

The event drew whip crackers from across England and Wales, with a high proportion of complete novices. Approximately 35 turned up throughout the day, and the event even drew attention in national and regional media!

This review from Pete sums up the day nicely :)

Many thanks to all for such a great event.

Objectives
We set out to make it a dedicated whipcracking event that would be fun, informal and informative for all, we reckon we achieved all those objectives. Did we break even? just about  Was it value for money ? A full day of workshops, demonstrations and competitions and great food provided by Pat for £12 on the day and £10 pre reg plus concessions for students etc

The People
Numbers: Some confusion there as we had people who couldn't stay all day and some who turned up a bit late after travelling all the way from the South Coast 25 -30 certainly. Ages?17 to 60 + From Bournemouth, Brighton, London, Swansea, Barry, Bristol, Manchester and Birminhgham to name just a few .Everybody got on so well, it was a great pleasure, new friends were met and old friendships revisited .

Spooky thing? two of the participants got into whips when I did the spaghetti cutting held between the legs stunt with them at shows and conventions Spookier thing? three who attended only came to accompany their friends/ partners and were happy to sit on the sideline until they were persuaded to give it a go and then they couldn't stop!!! and one of them, the fabulous Leigh. just picked it up stormingly AND won a prize

The Venue
The Sports Centre was excellent. New,  bright and clean, the staff were excellent, Matt the Duty Manager was fantastic and coped with our increasingly bizarre requests with a lovely manner, nothing was too much trouble for him and a lot of the success of the event has to go to him and Ryan for their professionalism and good nature.

The Programme
We had a bare bones of what we wanted to do but tried to make sure that everybody had input on what they wanted to do and that worked really nicely. With Dave's invaluable input and gift for organising it came together really well.

Sadly with the rain we lost the use of the outside tennis courts ( that incidentally, had been freshly painted for us!!) that did mean that the accomplished crackers missed the opportunity of dedicated activities for them a bit. But we reckon we can get that covered better next time with spots for wraps and two handed routines.

Did we do a show? No, could we have? it would have been nice to have at least party pieces but truth is we ran out of time and everyone seemed happy to have a chance at practicing.

My thanks for all the help and support provided by Dave Branch from English Whips, Adam, and his partner and their volunteers Phil and ??) , Ian, Jo, Francis, Matt and his staff and not forgetting our sponsors Scott Martin ( Martin Whips) Greg DeSaye, Benton Cassaday ( House of Rawhide) and Simon Martin Whips;  without whom we could not have put the event on.
